BTS Tunnel Design & Construction Course 2011
Date: 2nd to 6th July 2012
Location: University of Warwick, Coventry, UK
This Annual Course is ideal for young consulting and contracting engineers starting out on a career in tunnelling, and for others (such as Clients and insurance professionals) who have an involvement with tunnelling. It provides an in-depth introduction to the majority of tunnelling-related subjects, presented by industry experts.

BTS Underground Health and Safety Course
Date: 28th and 29th November 2011
Location: Institution of Civil Engineers, One Great George St, London.
This annual course has been developed to focus exclusively on the underground environment. It aims to provide an introduction or enhance existing basic knowledge and develop an awareness of the particular health and safety challenges that working underground can pose. Booking is now open. Thailand Underground and Tunnelling Group (TUTG) is hosting the World Tunnel Congress and 38th General Assembly of the International Tunnelling Association (ITA-AITES) from 18th to 23rd May 2012.
WTC2012 Bangkok will highlight the fact that underground space utilisation is important not only for particular nations or groups or businesses, but also for the entire global society. WTC2012 Bangkok is intended to be a wake up call for the decision makers in the region to realise the benefits of using underground space and the importance of developing the global tunnelling and underground construction society.

Organised by IOM Communications on behalf of the Mining Technology Division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining and co-sponsored by the BTS.
Following on from the UK conferences Shaft Sinking and Tunnelling 1959 (53 years ago) and Shaft Engineering 1989 (23 years ago), which covered the topic globally, this conference is again targeted at design and construction professionals worldwide. The scope will include both civil engineering shafts and mine shafts and all areas of design and construction will be considered.

To celebrate 40 years of the BTS a commemorative evening was held at the ICE on Wednesday 5th October 2011. The current Chairman was joined by many previous chairmen and guests to mark the continuing success of the BTS and the UK tunnelling industry.
Prior to a commemorative dinner, the attendees were entertained by two presentations: David Donaldson, of Donaldson Associates and a former BTS Chairman, highlighted some of the changes and achievements within tunnelling within the last 40 years Andrew Wolstenholme, CEO of Crossrail, took a look into the future of tunnelling and the challenges that lie ahead.
The Underground Construction Conference and Exhibition Incorporating the International Tunnelling Exhibition was held on 29th and 30th June 2011 at Earls Court, London.

The Sir Alan Muir Wood Symposium was held on Thursday 21st October at the ICE, and was followed by an Evening Drinks Reception and Dinner.
