Welcome To The British Tunnelling Society

The BTS actively participates in many of the Working Groups of the ITA through members of the society. As the need arises the BTS Committee forms working groups from its members to actively pursue various aspects of the Industry. Many of these working groups in the last few years have led to the successful publication of documents such as the following:

  • BTS Tunnelling Specification;
  • Joint Code of Practice on Risk Management;
  • Design Guide;
  • Best Practice Guide on Hand Arm Vibration;
  • Best Practice Guide on Occupational Exposure to Nitrogen Monoxide;
  • Best Practice Guide on Stability of Closed Face Tunnelling Machines.

Guidance on where these publications can be found is given in the Publications section of this website

Once a particular publication has been published then that specific working group is disbanded. A list of Technical working groups in existence at any one time is enclosed under the Technical Working Group header.

In addition to the working groups specifically convened for tasks such as those above, there are a number of Working Groups that are formed as part of the general management of the Society and the following pages detail the activities of these Groups.
