JCoP for Risk Management of Tunnel Works in the UK

This Working Group is chaired by: Terry Mellors

Please click the download link for the press release.

In 2002 The BTS received representations from the Insurance Industry who advised the BTS of their concerns regarding the cost of Claims on Tunnel projects. The Association of British Insurers (ABI) were so concerned that they advised BTS that they were actually considering not offering insurance on tunnel projects unless something could be done to improve the situation.

ABI proposed that a Joint Code of Practice be prepared by the ABI and BTS setting out guidance for Owners, Designers and Contractors on the management of risk on tunnel projects guidance which if followed would allow Insurers to provide Insurance Cover.

A working party of members of the BTS Committee under the chairmanship of Terry Mellors joined with the ABI and over a period of approximately a year produced a Joint Code of Practice.

The Code was launched at Underground Construction 2003 and has been taken up by the industry not only in the UK but overseas.

The Code is available from the BTS secretariat by emailing a request to bts@ice.org and costs £10 + £2 p&p.

As a result of the success of the code Mr Terry Mellors is presently working with Insurers and the international community to prepare an international code which will hopefully be supported by ITA
