In response to the lack of a British or European standard on tunnel design the BTS has produce a Lining Design Guide. This work was led by Chris Smith under the auspices of the BTS Technical sub-committee and in collaboration with the ICE utilised the wide ranging expertise available with the ranks of the BTS Members.
The Guide which is published by Thomas Telford contains guidance on the design of segmental, cast in-situ concrete and sprayed concrete linings and covers the key requirements for a tunnel lining including design principles, methods of design and detailing and provides a selection of case histories as examples.
The Lining Guide is the first of its kind in the world and will be essential reading to all persons involved in the design and use of tunnel linings.
The Guide is available from the Thomas Telford bookshop priced at £60.00.
The BTS in association with the Pipejack Association and the Health and Safety Executive have prepared a guidance document on access requirements to tunnels and pipejacks with a diameter of less than 3m diameter.
