Sustainability Policy

The sustainability policy of the British Tunnelling Society (BTS) is formed around the belief that tunnel projects are critical elements in building sustainable infrastructure. It is therefore committed to:

• promoting tunnelling as a sustainable construction option;
• applying the principles of sustainability in the planning, design, construction and maintenance of tunnels and other underground structures.
• identifying and disseminating best practice in terms of sustainability between members to increase efficiency and reduce the depletion of resources when constructing tunnels;

The BTS sustainability policy exists to support and promote the sustainable aspirations of its membership, the tunnelling industry and associated societies, and support the society’s role as an active lobbyist. The BTS has long supported the application of best practice in the creation of underground space, by education, training and appropriate experience. Its members have always been committed to the consideration of economic, societal and environmental factors in designing and constructing tunnels, which is central to the achievement of sustainable development. The BTS is an Associated Society of the Institution of Civil Engineers, with whom this policy has been developed.
