Tunnel Safety Training Scheme

The Tunnel Safety Training Scheme was launched in September 2015, and is expected to become the standard requirement for safety training for all those working underground on tunnelling projects.

The TSTS scheme replaces the existing three tunnelling safety training schemes:

  • Tunnel Safety Card (TSC)
  • Underground Safety Passport (USP)
  • CITB HS&E specialist tunnelling test

The one day course programme covers a wide range of topics and concludes with a multiple choice test. The course style and contents have been carefully designed and are targetted at addressing safe working in tunnels under construcution.

This is an industry led solution, and is being supported by CITB, TunnelSkills and the British Tunnelling Society (BTS). From concept through to delivery, contractors, clients and providers have been consulted, often with direct input into development. Endorsement is being sought from all major contractors and clients.

The TSTS is aimed at all those working in a tunnel under construction, to ensure that a minimum standard of health and safety knowledge is obtained before going into the underground environment, and that this level is maintained or enhanced.

For further information and bookings, please visit the CITB website, and for a copy of the course contents, please click the 'Download Flyer' button above. Bookings will shortly be available.

Anyone who has one of the existing cards will need to attend the new TSTS course and pass the test before the existing card expires.
