PHEW Tunnels Sub Committee

Progress – September 2016

The PHEW AGM was held in Hull in September 2016 and reported on the Moseley, Burdale and Queensbury Tunnels

Queensbury Tunnel has now been accepted by PHEW as it has some unusual 1930s reinforced concrete strengthening works in the open shafts and it was also one of the first tunnels in which compressed air rock drills were successfully used to drive a long length of the tunnel following lack of progress using manual means of drilling holes for blasting. The Queensbury Tunnel group has published its report on refurbishing the tunnel as a cycle track.

At the time of reporting, Clayton Tunnel was about to be revisited to look at the collapse.
