Nitrogen Monoxide

The control of the working atmosphere is extremely important in tunnelling. The COSHH Regulations require that if exposure cannot be prevented, then the exposure has to be adequately controlled. The European Union Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits recommended a significant reduction in exposure to nitrogen monoxide, resulting in the HSE withdrawing the exposure limit for nitrogen monoxide in 2006, stating that "employers should determine their own working practice and in-house standards for control, so that repeated exposure does not cause ill health". Consequently, in 2008, the BTS acting on expert opinion published industry guidance on controlling exposure to nitrogen monoxide in tunnelling.
