Joseph Gallagher (known to all as Josie) has worked in the tunnelling industry since 1965. After building a solid reputation as Foreman on many leading tunnelling projects Joseph set up his own company, Joseph Gallagher Limited in 1982. It has expanded into a worldwide business with a multi-million pound turnover, operating in three continents. It encompasses the core business as well as Specialist Plant, NRC Plant, Iseki Micro tunnelling, and Johnson Trenchless Solutions. The core values on which Joseph built his business still hold strong. Commanding a loyal and skilled workforce, he enjoys an industry-wide reputation for reliability and fair play.

In awarding the medal the committee felt that not only were they acknowledging the enormous contribution that Joseph has made to the tunnelling industry but also providing a token of the contribution that the people of the West Coast of Ireland have made.
